For a premature baby, early detection can make the difference between preventable vision loss and a future with sight.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition that can often be treated when detected early. But without timely screening, complications can lead to permanent vision loss.

In Syria, SAMS is working to close this gap through a telemedicine-based ROP screening program launched in Damascus and Idlib. Since June, more than 80 premature infants have been screened, with necessary treatments provided, including intravitreal injections and laser therapy.

The program has now expanded to Hama, where 28 premature infants received retinal screenings during its first phase at the Children’s and Maternity Hospital. Next, SAMS plans to expand the program to Aleppo and Homs, helping build a sustainable national network for early ROP detection.

Our goal is simple: every premature infant in Syria should have access to a timely retinal screening.
