Syrian American Medical Society Launches Return & Rebuild Medical Mission 2026 Across Syria

More than 155 international volunteers to deliver specialized care, training, and healthcare system support across Syria

Washington, D.C. – June 20, 2026 — The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is launching its Return & Rebuild Medical Mission 2026, bringing together more than 155 international volunteers, including physicians representing dozens of specialties, medical students, and community volunteers, to support healthcare delivery and medical education across Syria.

Taking place in two phases from June 20-25 and June 30-July 2, the mission will provide medical, surgical, dental, and educational services in Deir Ezzor, Al-Hasaka, Raqqa, Hama, Homs, Damascus, Daraa, Aleppo, Idlib, Tartous, and Latakia.

Volunteer teams will deliver multispecialty care spanning ophthalmology, surgery, interventional cardiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, mental health, oncology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, nephrology, gastroenterology, dermatology, radiology, and other specialized fields. Alongside direct patient care, volunteers will conduct training sessions, mentorship activities, and knowledge exchange programs aimed at strengthening local healthcare capacity and supporting the next generation of Syrian healthcare professionals.

Conducted under the patronage of Syria’s Ministries of Health and Higher Education, the mission reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare and advancing medical education throughout the country.

“For this mission, we seek to stand alongside our esteemed colleagues within Syria, exchanging knowledge and expertise, working hand in hand to serve our communities, and supporting the education and training of future physicians and medical students,” said Dr. Luay Alkotob, Chairman of the SAMS Foundation Board.

For decades, SAMS has remained committed to reaching underserved and historically marginalized communities throughout Syria. This year’s mission marks a significant milestone as SAMS expands its medical mission program to Al-Hasaka, Syria, an area that has long faced barriers to accessing specialized healthcare services. The deployment is expected to be the first international medical mission organized by an international humanitarian organization in that area.

The mission is also one of the largest medical missions in SAMS history, bringing Syrian healthcare professionals from around the world back to their homeland to serve patients, share expertise, and strengthen local institutions.

“Nearly 150 physicians, representing one of the largest medical missions in SAMS history, are returning from around the world to serve communities across Syria, from Al-Hasaka to Tartous and from Aleppo to Daraa,” said Dr. Mohammad Saleh, Medical Missions Leader at SAMS. “Beyond delivering specialized care, they will work alongside local healthcare professionals to share the latest medical knowledge, train resident physicians, and inspire a culture of volunteerism and service among medical students throughout the country.”
