SAMS Announces Leadership Transition of Foundation Board
The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Luay Alkotob as Chairman of the SAMS Foundation Board, for a two-year term beginning May 1, 2026.
Dr. Alkotob assumes this role at a defining moment in SAMS’ evolution, as the organization continues its transition from emergency humanitarian response and medical relief organization in Syria and neighboring countries to a long-term, systems-focused approach centered on healthcare sustainability, medical education, and the development of Centers of Excellence across Syria.
A dedicated physician and longtime contributor to SAMS’ medical missions in Jordan and Syria, Dr. Alkotob brings a strong record of service, leadership, and commitment to advancing high-quality, compassionate care.
“We are confident that Dr. Alkotob’s leadership will further advance the Foundation’s role in supporting sustainable, high-impact healthcare initiatives,” said Dr. Aref Rifai, President of SAMS. “We look forward to working closely with him in this next chapter.”
SAMS also extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Abdulfattah ElShaar, who served as Chairman of the Foundation Board from February 2023 to February 2026.
During his tenure, SAMS underwent a significant transformation—expanding from a primarily emergency-response organization into a comprehensive healthcare institution with a portfolio exceeding $70 million and operations across all Syrian provinces.
Dr. ElShaar also played a critical leadership role during the February 2023 earthquake response and was instrumental in shaping SAMS’ strategic vision, including the development of Centers of Excellence and innovative financial models for long-term sustainability.
“We are deeply grateful for Dr. ElShaar’s exceptional leadership and lasting contributions,” added Dr. Rifai. “His impact will continue to guide SAMS in the years ahead.”
As SAMS marks this leadership transition, the organization remains committed to its mission of delivering high-quality healthcare, advancing medical education, and building a resilient health system for the people of Syria.
