Maternal and Child Health Care in Syria

The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Maternal and Child Health Program provides essential, life-saving care to mothers and newborns in conflict-stricken Syria and for refugees in neighboring regions.

Through specialized maternity hospitals, outpatient clinics, and mobile medical units, SAMS delivers comprehensive prenatal, neonatal, and postnatal care in areas where access to healthcare remains limited.

In 2024 alone, SAMS-supported facilities helped safely deliver more than 22,000 babies, ensuring mothers received skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth, and recovery.

This work strengthens Syria’s fragile health system and helps ensure that every child has a healthy start — even in the most challenging conditions.

Learn How SAMS Supports Mothers & Babies

In this special conversation, Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Board Member Sawsan Rashdan and Every Pregnancy CEO Isra Chaker share how SAMS and Every Pregnancy are partnering through the #ForMama26 Challenge to support mothers and newborns across Syria.

From safe deliveries to critical neonatal care, they highlight the urgent maternal health needs facing families today - and how your support this Ramadan can help ensure mothers receive compassionate, life-saving care and babies are given a healthy start in life.

Mohammad's
Success Story

Born with severe respiratory distress and pneumonia complicated by pulmonary hypertension, baby Mohammad was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Qah Maternity Hospital, supported by SAMS.

After days of intensive, life-saving care and close monitoring, Mohammad was gradually weaned off the ventilator. His condition steadily improved, and he was soon able to feed normally again.

Today, Mohammad has been discharged in good health, with a follow-up plan in place to ensure his continued recovery.

His journey is a reminder of why we do this work. At SAMS, we remain committed to standing by families in displacement camps, especially those unable to return home, providing care, hope, and support at every step of the healing journey.
