Our Impact: Healing, Hope, and Health for Vulnerable Communities

For over a decade, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) has been a beacon of hope, relentlessly delivering comprehensive, compassionate healthcare to communities shattered by conflict, displacement, and hardship. Operating across Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and beyond, SAMS champions an extensive network of programs.

From emergency response and trauma care to vital mental health support, maternal and child health services, specialized medical interventions, and cutting-edge healthcare education and research, we're committed to rebuilding health systems where they're needed most.

Our dedicated teams work tirelessly in hospitals, clinics, mobile units, and refugee camps, ensuring lifesaving treatments and essential health services reach the most vulnerable populations. Through continuous medical missions, advanced training, capacity-building initiatives, and research collaborations, SAMS empowers local healthcare professionals, fostering resilient health systems even in the world's most challenging environments.

Our Work

Here’s a closer look at the core programs that define SAMS's commitment to health and healing:

Medical Missions

Since 2014, SAMS has mobilized more than 1,500 skilled volunteers to provide critical medical care across Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, Greece, and beyond. These volunteer-led missions deliver a wide range of services, including primary care, surgery, dental care, mental health support, and pediatrics. We work hand-in-hand with local hospitals and organizations, bringing patient-centered care directly to those who need it most.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)

Recognizing the profound psychological toll of conflict, SAMS offers trauma-informed mental health services that address anxiety, PTSD, depression, and more. Our programs encompass individual therapy, group workshops, specialized support for survivors of gender-based violence, and tailored interventions for children and adolescents, fostering healing, resilience, and hope.

Essential Health Programs

SAMS delivers comprehensive primary healthcare, including vital maternal and child health services, chronic disease management, vaccination campaigns, and the reach of mobile clinics. By focusing on prevention, continuity of care, and robust community outreach, these programs strengthen health at the grassroots level, building healthier communities from the ground up.

Signature Programs

Our signature medical initiatives provide specialized care in critical areas like oncology, cardiology, dentistry, neurology, and critical care. These programs directly address significant gaps in local health systems, dramatically improving survival rates and enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable patients.

Survivor & Disability Programs

SAMS is deeply committed to supporting survivors of conflict-related injuries, sexual and gender-based violence, and disabilities. We offer holistic medical, psychosocial, and rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, prosthetics, mental health care, and tailored support designed to restore independence and dignity. Beyond clinical care, SAMS empowers survivors through advocacy, vocational training, and community integration programs that foster long-term resilience and inclusion.

Emergency & Humanitarian Response

Since 2016, SAMS Global Response (SGR) has rapidly deployed emergency medical care to communities impacted by conflict and disasters worldwide. Through dedicated volunteer teams and strong local partnerships, SGR delivers critical health services and humanitarian relief in some of the most remote and hard-to-reach areas, ensuring vital care reaches those who need it most, precisely when they need it.

SAMS Institute

Founded in 2022, the SAMS Institute is dedicated to enhancing medical education quality and accessibility for healthcare professionals in Syria and the surrounding region. Addressing ongoing conflict and resource constraints, the Institute offers innovative in-person and remote training programs, covering undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as continuing medical education. These crucial efforts aim to close the healthcare workforce gap and strengthen health systems for the future.

SAMS Research Department

The SAMS Research Department spearheads collaborative, evidence-based research to improve healthcare outcomes in Syria and other conflict-affected regions. By generating innovative studies and actionable policy insights, the department supports effective, practical solutions to health challenges faced by displaced and vulnerable populations. Grounded in scientific rigor, ethical standards, and strategic partnerships, SAMS research plays a vital role in shaping humanitarian interventions and building resilient healthcare systems in crisis zones.
