SAMS Launches Syria Liberation Month to Celebrate Resilience and Rebuilding
Campaign honors Syria’s journey from crisis to liberation and the courage of its people
Washington, D.C. – November 4, 2025 – For 15 years, the people of Syria have faced unimaginable hardship. This December, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) invites the world to honor Syria’s resilience and the historic milestone of liberation.
SAMS is proud to launch Syria Liberation Month, beginning December 1, 2025. December 8 is now officially recognized as Liberation Day in Syria, marking a new chapter in the nation’s history and symbolizing hope, renewal, and resilience. Throughout December, SAMS will host chapter-led events across the U.S., a social media storytelling series, and highlight the critical work still ahead to rebuild and strengthen Syria’s healthcare system.
Syria has endured one of the most devastating humanitarian crises of our time. More than 16.5 million Syrians rely on humanitarian assistance, and roughly half of the country’s hospitals and clinics remain damaged or partially functional.
Over the past decade, chemical attacks struck neighborhoods and hospitals, overwhelming healthcare workers with minimal supplies. As hospitals became targets, SAMS doctors carried out lifesaving work underground—performing surgeries and delivering babies in caves and basements while bombs fell overhead. When COVID-19 swept across Syria, SAMS provided PPE, testing, and patient care while continuing emergency services. In 2023, when the Türkiye–Syria earthquake devastated communities, SAMS teams were on the ground—treating the injured, coordinating supplies, and saving lives.
On December 8, 2024, Syria reached a historic turning point: liberation. Communities are beginning to rebuild, and for SAMS, this marks a shift from emergency response to long-term recovery and reconstruction. Through its Syria Health 2030 initiative, SAMS is reopening hospitals, restoring medical networks, and training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
“Our members serve with no expectation of reward—only the hope of healing. Now it’s time to grow that hope into something lasting,” said SAMS President Dr. Aref Rifai.
Syria Liberation Month 2025 celebrates the courage of the Syrian people and the dedication of SAMS’ medical teams. SAMS invites supporters and global partners to join chapter-led events, follow the social media storytelling series, and stand alongside those working to rebuild and strengthen Syria’s healthcare system.
