SAMS provides critical stroke care in northern Syria, delivering rapid treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term support that saves lives and restores independence.
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and in conflict-affected areas the risk is even greater. At Idlib Central Hospital, SAMS operates a specialized stroke unit designed for rapid admission, emergency care, and rehabilitation. Services now also extend to Al Shifa Hospital in Afrin, ensuring that more patients in northern Syria have access to life-saving treatment.

Specialized Stroke Care
The stroke unit at Idlib Central Hospital includes 15 ward beds, six ICU beds, and CT scanning capacity. Patients receive thrombolysis, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy tailored to their needs. An attached clinic provides continuous monitoring, while an intensive care area ensures emergency transfers can be managed immediately.
In 2024, SAMS expanded these services to Al Shifa Hospital in Afrin, establishing four ICU beds and six ward beds. Both hospitals follow four thrombolysis protocols that guide timely, individualized treatment.
A Race Against Time: Ahmed's Story
Jamila’s Story
At 46, Jamila, the sole provider for her family, suffered a sudden stroke at night. When she reached Idlib Central Hospital seven hours later, she had already passed the ideal treatment window for clot-dissolving medication.
Dr. Ahmad Mutlaq and his team chose cerebral catheterization to remove the clot. The procedure was successful, and Jamila recovered quickly with no permanent symptoms. She was able to return home to her family and continue supporting them.
Her story shows how rapid intervention and access to specialized care can mean the difference between disability and recovery.
