From restoring hearing through cochlear implants to supporting children with autism and youth living with diabetes, SAMS delivers care that meets urgent needs and transforms daily life.
SAMS operates one of the few comprehensive cochlear implant programs in northern Syria, offering children with profound hearing loss a chance to hear and thrive. Since launching in August 2022, the program has:
Provided 23 cochlear implants
Enrolled 42 children in ongoing speech rehabilitation
Delivered 2,332 speech therapy sessions
Supported an additional 870 children through 2,483 therapy sessions, with 467 graduates from external programs
Hearing Hope: Amin’s Journey
At 10 years old, Amin Al-Khatib faced both hearing and vision loss caused by Usher Syndrome. Despite being older than the usual age limit for surgery, SAMS approved his case for a cochlear implant at Bab Al-Hawa Hospital.
“Post-surgery tests showed excellent results,” said Dr. Hamza, the ENT specialist who led the procedure. “He’ll now begin advanced speech therapy to support his communication.”
Amin’s father added: “This is the second cochlear implant SAMS has done for my son. I’m filled with gratitude for their support and compassion.”
To date, SAMS has completed 46 cochlear implant surgeries in northwest Syria, bringing sound and hope to children like Amin.
Cochlear Implants in Lebanon
In June 2024, SAMS launched its first cochlear implant mission in Lebanon in partnership with Rayak Hospital and Right to Hear. Over four days, expert surgeons and audiologists performed 10 surgeries for children aged 1–6 in the Bekaa Valley.
Each child will return for device activation and begin rehabilitation with local charities to ensure long-term success. The mission also navigated significant hurdles, border restrictions, security concerns, and logistical barriers, yet still succeeded in restoring hearing and strengthening partnerships for future programs.

A Journey of Progress and Possibility
A 7-year-old girl with autism and motor delays came to TMH struggling with anxiety, limited speech, and poor motor control. With consistent therapy, she gained independence in eating, drinking, and bathroom use. She also began communicating through gestures and words, while engaging more confidently with peers. Her mother expressed deep gratitude for the life-changing support.

Youth with Diabetes – Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq & Syria
In partnership with Life For A Child, SAMS provides young people with type 1 diabetes the tools and training to manage their condition. A Fighting Chance: Abdullah’s Journey
Abdullah has lived with diabetes for seven years in Zaatari Camp, where access to insulin and test strips is often scarce. Thanks to SAMS and Life For A Child, he now has the supplies and education needed to manage his health.
Dr. Musab Abu Khait explains: “Children like Abdullah deserve consistent access to care and supplies so they can avoid life-threatening complications and just focus on being kids.”
Abdullah himself shared: “I love sports and studying, and all I wish for is to be cured of my illness.”
