Dr. Freij is Physician Emeritus at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He obtained his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1980. After completing his pediatric internship and residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1983, he became a Research Fellow in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas, Southwestern Medical Center, between 1983 and 1985. Dr. Freij then pursued additional training as a Visiting Fellow at the Infectious Diseases Branch, National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, between 1985 and 1987. In 1987, he became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, a post he held until coming to Beaumont Children’s Hospital in 1990 as Chief, Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and until 2023. He is Board-certified in Pediatrics and in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Freij’s academic work includes numerous publications, service on national pediatric infectious disease- related committees, and membership on three journal editorial boards. He has received teaching awards from Beaumont Children’s Hospital, Georgetown University, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.
