Washington, DC – On October 9, 2015, the Syrian American Medical Society hosted its first #Advocate4Syria lobby day on Capitol Hill. Representative Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, began the day’s events with a statement on the Syrian crisis, the work of SAMS, and possible future steps for protecting civilians in Syria.
“Of course, this is an enormous challenge, with no simple solutions. But we have to pick a place to start. Preferably that place would give protection to everyday citizens who want to live their lives without fear. One that allows people to stay in their homes, their communities, or at the very least in their own country. Rather than taking the desperate step of attempting to cross the Mediterranean at the mercy of human traffickers and unseaworthy vessels. We need to take immediate measures to treat the “symptoms” of this conflict and at long-term policy decisions that will treat the roots causes,” said Chairman Royce.
Chairman Royce’s statement comes at a critical time. Russian airstrikes have added to the daily threats that Syrian civilians and health workers face. It is vital that the United States and the international community work with urgency to provide protection for civilians, medical personnel, and healthcare facilities in Syria.
