Ramadan is a time of reflection, compassion, and giving, and many people have questions about how they can make a meaningful impact during this holy month.
In this FAQ, we answer common questions about the significance of Ramadan, how you can support families in need, SAMS’ medical programs, Zakat donations, our operations, and our long-term initiatives like Syria Health 2030.
1. What is the significance of Ramadan?
Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic year—a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and giving. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset to strengthen their faith and show compassion for those in need. Deeds performed during Ramadan are believed to bring multiplied spiritual rewards.
2. When does Ramadan 2026 start?
Ramadan in 2026 is expected to begin at sunset on Tuesday, 17 February, and end at sunset on Thursday, 19 March. As with all Islamic months, the exact start date depends on the sighting of the new moon, so dates may vary slightly by country and local religious authorities.
3. When is Eid 2026?
Eid al-Fitr in 2026 is expected to be celebrated on Friday, 20 March, marking the end of Ramadan. The exact date depends on the sighting of the Shawwal moon, so it may vary by country and local Islamic authorities, with celebrations beginning at sunset the night before.
4. What happens when you miss a fast during Ramadan?
If a fast is missed during Ramadan, the ruling depends on the reason. When a fast is missed for a valid excuse—such as illness, travel, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menstruation—the missed day should be made up later when it becomes possible. If a fast is missed intentionally without a valid excuse, the individual is required to repent sincerely and make up the missed fast, and in some cases an expiation (fidya or kaffarah) may also be required, according to Islamic guidance. It is recommended to consult a trusted scholar for personal situations.

2. How can I donate Zakat through SAMS?
SAMS is Zakat-eligible. You can fulfill your Zakat by donating through the Ramadan page and designating it toward:

Zakat gifts ensure people in crisis receive the care they cannot afford.
3. How can I make a donation to your organization?
You can donate securely through our website using a credit/debit card or PayPal. We also accept bank transfers, checks, and recurring donations.
4. Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and your donation is tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Our Tax ID is 16-1717058. A donation receipt will be sent to your email.
5. What percentage of my donation goes to helping those in need?
For every dollar donated in 2024, 96 cents went directly to programs.
6. Can I designate my donation to a specific program or cause?
Absolutely. During the donation process, you can select the project or fund you’d like your gift to support.
7. How do I set up a recurring monthly donation?
When donating online, select the option to make your gift monthly. You can manage or cancel recurring donations at any time.
8. Will I receive a receipt for my donation?
Yes. You will receive an email confirmation immediately after donating, and an annual tax statement will be sent each January.
9. Do you accept matching gifts?

10. What is your refund policy for donations?
If you believe your donation was made in error, please email info@sams-usa.net within 30 days for a refund.
11. Can I donate in honor or memory of someone?
Yes, you can dedicate your donation. Include a note in the online comments and we can email the honoree. If you mail in your donation, please include a note with this information.
12. Do you accept gift- in-kind donations like medical supplies or equipment?
Yes. Please email gik@sams-usa.net to discuss the type and condition of the items, as we have specific guidelines for in-kind contributions.
13. Can I mail my donation instead of giving online?
Yes!
